Theory of Change at the YMCA

What is the area of change (problem that needs to be solved)?
An area that has room for improvement at the Kent County YMCA is by engaging children during art club. Children are disengaged, and often discouraged when the art club facilitator (an art teacher) discourages them or does not pay attention to particular students.

Who is your key audience?
Youth in grades three to five.

What is your entry point to reaching your key audience?Facilitating conversations and de briefing the art club activity the next day. Asking students how they feel during art club, how can I support them during this time, and allowing youth to voice their opinions.
I would also be having conversations with the site coordinator during this time to come up with ideas to suit the youth's needs.

What steps are needed to reach change?
Having discussions with youth weekly after art club.
Having alternative activities or fidgets.
Providing positive feedback to students.
Counselor engagement in activity.

These steps can help provide youth have a more positive approach during art club. To track these changes, a tracker can be set up for each young person to write a feeling or draw an emoji based on how they are feeling after the art club activity. Sign up sheets can also be provided for other clubs. To make it fair so art club has an equal number of youth, students can have a schedule in which students take turns in art club. One week half the students have art club, the next week the youth would flip. The students not having art club can have a different type of activity based on shared interests and a consensus of the activity. A long term goal would be for students to feel positive and engaged within counselor limits and having engaging activities that youth enjoy.
