Mission and Vision Analysis

Kent County YMCA Mission: The mission of the YMCA of Greater Providence is to build healthy spirit, mind and body for all, through programs, services and relationships that are based upon our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Kent County YMCA Vision:
To become the most valued resource for families and individuals seeking healthy lifestyles and wellness.

My spin on the YMCA Mission:  Our organization is dedicated to build upon our core values in the community through programs which establish a healthy well being.

My spin on the YMCA Vision: To become a strong, excellent resource for all individuals of the community looking to establish and strengthen healthy lifestyles, strong relationships, and wellness.

Critique of the Mission: While the YMCA mission showcases strengths, such as being easily explainable and one sentence, this mission statement needs improvement. When reading the Kent County YMCA mission, it makes me think that I am reading a run-on sentence. To begin, I am aware that I am looking at the YMCA's website, so it is not needed in the mission statement. The words well-being could be used instead of using healthy spirit, mind, and body. Well- being encompasses all of these things and more. The values are also not necessary in the mission statement. Another section could elaborate on the values of the organization.

My Critique of the Vision: The YMCA has a strong vision statement. Some strengths included are its concise and clear sentence. It is easily explained by those who work in the non profit organization. It shows a wish, hope or dream for the future which is excellent as well.

  1. Hey Jackie! I thought your analysis of the YMCA's mission statement was super thoughtful and I totally agree with your critiques. You really spent a lot of time analyzing their run-on sentences and I thought it was great you suggested a word that would encompass the multiple words they chose!

  2. Thanks for your post Jackie. I agree that wellbeing is a great (and concise) substitute for healthy spirit, mind and body. Also, I wonder if/ how the Y would talk about what a healthy spirit means? Is it a question of spirituality? Or social-emotional wellbeing?

  3. Heyo Jackie!! I liked your analysis on the mission and vision statements of the YMCA and I agree with them a lot. I think replacing certain words with other words that make the same impact will be beneficial to the organization and people wanting to learn more about the YMCA.
