Non Profits: What are those?

Non Profit: Means not- for- profit. The purpose of a non -profit is not to make profit.

Non- Profit Organization: An organization which is tax exempt by the IRS. They are recognized as 501(c)3 or 501(c)4 organizations.

Non- Profit Organizations serve a wide spectrum of the community. Non- profits often serve youth, families, communities, college students, and many other areas. Some of the largest non-profits are hospitals and private universities. For example, PC and Rhode Island Hospital are non-profits. However there are smaller scale non-profits as well (the majority of non-profits all over the world are). You might even belong to one without even realizing it. Some of the non-profit organizations I know and belong to are the Kent County YMCA, Girl Scouts, and Theta Delta Sigma (a co-ed siblinghood). Some of these serve youth, families, and the community while others missions are to serve college aged students.

A diagram to provide examples of different kinds of non- profits.

Four Characteristics of Non Profit Organizations:

Non Profit Organizations must have a board of directors that oversee the entire organization. Depending on the scale and the type of non- profit organization, the board may vary. For example, Theta Delta Sigma has a board of directors at the local chapter as well as a national board that oversees every chapter of the organization.

Non Profit Organizations also have a goal to serve its community through their mission. For example the YMCA serves youth, and families. The YMCA serves it's community through it's mission of building a healthy mind, body, and spirit for youth, families, and the elderly.

Non Profit organizations also have a mission statement. The mission statement states an organizations goals, and how it operates from the board of directors view point.
"Theta Delta Sigma advocates for diversity awareness, supports personal development, and aims to build a lifelong bond among individuals of all backgrounds. Our Siblinghood empowers members to be inclusive leaders committed to uplifting marginalized communities."

Lastly, the board of directors makes all their decisions for the organization with the mission statement and vision in mind. The mission statement, vision, and purpose is the driving force of a non profit organization. The board of directors as well as all employers of nonprofit organizations should be able to communicate clearly, which is another characteristic of a non profit organization.

Question I Have: I did not have any questions about the articles however I was wondering what are the steps to starting a non-profit organization and can summer camps be a non-profit?

Comments

  1. Thanks for your post Jackie. I think others are also interested in the question of starting a nonprofit, so we will definitely build that into the syllabus. As for summer camps, yes most summer camps are nonprofits (either affiliated with larger orgs like a school or Y or their own NPOs. LOVE THE RAINBOW!
